About the Peak District

Arguably one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, the Peak District is home to varied and breathtaking landscapes, from the rolling hills and farmland of the South West Peak, the steep limestone dales of the White Peak area, to the impressive gritstone edges of the Dark Peak.

Just a short drive from Birchwoodmoor House, Dovedale in times past was visited by John Ruskin and Lord Byron, who compared it with Alpine Switzerland.

In 1951 the Peak District was the first area designated a National Park. It’s also an area popular for filming, and has featured in films including:

  • Pride and Prejudice (2005)

  • The Dam Busters (1955)

  • Jane Eyre (2011)

  • Robin Hood (2009)
